Up-and-coming talent often have trouble standing out against their competitors. To identify your personal brand you not only need to understand what you want to do but why you do it. Promoting your brand goes beyond a click of a button on LinkedIn, the process requires authentic human interaction. The brand you associate with yourself is how others will perceive you and remember you.

Questions to ask yourself when you are struggling to identify your brand:

  1. What do you love doing the most? For many that can be a difficult question to answer. Discover what you are passionate about and see how you can connect that to a potential career. By doing something you love, you automatically boost productivity and enhance performance. Passion brings energy to your work environment and motivates those around you.

  2. What are your strongest attributes? Figure out what sets you apart from others and use that to your advantage. These skills will define for others how you go about applying yourself to a role or task. To fully develop your brand on a personal and professional level you need to take advantage of utilizing your strengths.

  3. How would you want those who do not know you to perceive you? This can be one of the most common interview questions. It is important to know what you think of yourself and what you believe you are putting out into the world. By being honest with yourself you will discover your strengths and weaknesses. By understanding what you can bring to the table, you will be able to tell your story.

Now that you have identified your personal brand, you need to promote yourself:

  1. Be authentic in how you articulate yourself and your brand. When creating ePortfolios, resumes, and profiles you must stay consistent. If you are promoting yourself on a professional level on one platform, you must do so on all. Once you put yourself out there to the world, you can be found by just a Google search. Think about how you want yourself to be portrayed to the world.

  2. The profile you create for yourself must express you and pique people’s interest. People will refer to you based on what your brand entails. Think about your experiences and how they shaped you into who you are today. When creating profile descriptions for your brand use keywords so people can easily find you. Figure out what you want to do and what others are looking for, so you can include that information.

  3. Show up and present yourself well when it matters. First impressions can make or break moments. The way you portray yourself online must replicate how you present yourself in person. Come to meetings and interviews prepared and well dressed. Strongly presenting yourself can leave a lasting impression and go a long way.

It may be time to reinvent your personal brand, here are important steps in the rebranding process:

  1. Write a new story. If you are not satisfied with your current personal brand it may be time to rewrite your story. Learn from your past and create a new mission statement with your future goals. Think about your new accomplishment and experiences and build your brand off of that.

  2. Update the way you present yourself. It may be time for a new wardrobe, haircut, or pair of glasses. When you are rebranding you want to feel confident in your appearance and how you present yourself to the world. In the past, you may have not brought the right energy or attitude and want to change your outlook on situations. This can go beyond your appearance and how you present yourself online. Try out a new color theme on Instagram or remodel your ePortfolio. It is never too late to repackage your personal brand!

It is time to reintroduce yourself to the world, you want to make a strong impression. Develop a strong relaunch plan that represents your personal brand's repositioning.

  • A great way to start is by taking new headshot pictures that reflect your new repositioning. For example, if you are a real estate agent, try a home as your background. A high-quality profile picture can go a long way.

  • During the process of your rebranding, you should consistently be researching the industry. Figure out what works and what does not to outline your own perspective on issues. Share your viewpoints and ideas at the start so people take you seriously.

  • It is crucial to network, especially if you are repositioning your brand. Try to attend as many conferences and events as you can. A great way to get yourself out there is by joining an organization and making new connections.
